I believe they are but in differing degrees. My son is dyslexic, so in his case reading, writing and spelling are all blocking his ability to learn in todays traditional environment, however his verbal skills are at a very high level. This learning disability has been proven to be highly heritable. My daughter has been diagnosed with an expressive language disorder which has affected her ability to express herself verbally to her high level of cognitive abilities (very similar to what I experienced as a child) she does fine in reading, writing and spelling at her grade level. I am convinced their is a connection.
