It's hard to add to the answer Elaine gave, but I'll try.

1) EVERYTHING IN WRITING . If you talk to anybody, write a letter
confirming that "on x/x/xx I asked about, and you said..."
2) DON'T waive your rights. READ the compliance rules that they make
you sign- THEY will not be in compliance - call them on it - and follow
up in writing.
3) If you don't like the decission say the maguc words "Due Process
Hearing" If that does not work, FILE for one, right away.
4) Look for local help - the LDA has advocates in lots of areas, and at
the ARD, they are required to give you a list of organizations which
provide advocacy services.
5) Think about a lawyer - many advocacy groups are overworked - If you
get a lawyer, make sure that they are specialists in education law.
6) If they explain something to you about your rights and duties, assume
that they are wrong - check the law and practice out yourself!!
