School insists on treating bright girl with ADHD as lazy instead of disabled

Posted by Jackie M. Botala

I just found out my 9 yr old daughter has moderatley severe ADHD and
depression (brought on by poor school experiences). I have done the IEP
thing for my son who has auditory and visual processing defecits. The
problem is she, like her brother scored above average on IQ testing. It was
hard convincing the school to test either one. They were considered lazy,
obstinate and emotional. I was able to get some help for my son after
fighting for 5 yrs on this, though I don't feel he is getting everything
that went into his IEP.

My problem is I know next to nothing on ADHD. We are doing a blind srudyof
Ritalin to see if it may help her but what should I expect from the school?
She also has a writing and reading disabilty. It takes hours for her (her
brother is the same) to write something most others her age can write in 20
mins. She has had 2 yrs of summer chapter 1 reading program and will do so
again this yr. She is in third grade and I'm not sure how they let her get
that far without realizing what was happening. This year her teacher wanted
to keep her back but myself and the pyscologist the school hired to do eval
were against it. Her self esteem could not handle it. What else should I
ask for?

You may respond to me via email jbotala@together.net

Thank you,
Jackie
