In Reply to: EXPRESSIVE LANGUAGE DISORDER… posted by MadelineParadis
Most of us would agree that it takes a child some time to develop proper
speech, beginning with coo's, imitation of parents words, and on into actual
understandable words. Parents: Heed the shocking "factual" (based on
psyco-babble, of course) mental "disorder" listed below. Your child could be
their next target.
315.31Developmental expressive language disorder.
"The essential feature of this disorder is marked impairment in the development
of expressive language that is not explainable by Mental Retardation or
inadequate schooling and that is not due to a pervasive developmental disorder,
hearing impairment, or a neurologic disorder. The diagnosis is made only if
this impairment signifigantly interferes with academic achievement or with
activities of daily living that require the expression of verbal (or sign)
language."
Age of onset: "Severe forms usually occur before age three and are easily
ecognized. Less severe forma , may not occur until early adolescence, when
language ordinarily becomes more complex."
DSM 111-R
So, if your child doesn't have "decent, understandable" speech usually before
age 3, he has a mental disorder! More hogwash from psychiatry.
But before the age of 3?!?!? Get REAL!
If a child has a difficulty in learning speech, get the child to a good Board
Certified speech therapist. Another tried and true "safe method" to help
children develop speaking skills and proper word pronunciation is to read to
the child! A "mental disorder" label stays with your child forever and does
*nothing* to handle the source of his/her difficulty.
